Music and My Dad!

For this entry, I decided to interview my best friend and biggest musical influence in life, my dad! My earliest memories of music come from him listening to it 24/7 as I grew up, and he showed me all the best music from any era. He immigrated here from the Philippines so I thought it would be cool to also learn about music from the perspective of someone who's been a part of different cultures. He's even had some cool music stories over the years that I asked him to share. I hope you have as much fun watching this as I did doing it! I think my dad is a fun storyteller with some interesting but also comical things to say, so enjoy!

I started by asking my dad a few introductory questions about music. Music is very important to him, even though he was slow to elaborate on it at first...lol. Like he said, he listens to it everyday, which I can attest to since anytime I'm home, he has music either blasting from speakers, playing in his headphones, or coming from his very extensive CD collection that I can only hope to one day inherit. He can also always be found doing little dances to the music which I think he was too embarrassed to share.

He talks about how his grandmother who spoke Spanish (and was the head of the whole family) was really his first musical influence and that he grew up with all kinds of music. From the Spanish music of his grandmother, to the Rock and Roll movement of the 60's, to the Jazz phenomenon in the Philippines, he loved it all. He was so into music that he actually took it upon himself to learn the guitar. He is self-taught and still to this day can be found playing it on the steps of our front porch back home in Los Angeles. He also played saxophone in high school, which luckily passed down to me as I played it throughout middle school and we both had a lot of fun with it. I also asked him about his favorite concert experiences, some of which I didn't even know he saw!

Answering more of my questions, he even talked about his perceived differences of music culture between the Philippines and America. My dad even shared some of the fun stories I brought up earlier :) He also talked about the different eras of music throughout time and his favorite artists of those times. He even shared some currently popular artists today like Taylor Swift that he really likes (he loves Taylor's music which we get to further bond on).

Here's some snippets of the music my dad talked about!

Earth, Wind, and Fire (one of his favorite bands and favorite concert experiences)

Side A (one of the most popular bands in the Philippines my dad helped discover!)

Piano Man by Billy Joel (my dad's favorite song)

Thanks for watching and listening! Hope you had fun with my dad!

  1. I love the video of you and your dad, it is so cute. I think it is so cool he grew up during the rock and roll era of music. I think it is cool that American Rock and Roll was famous in the Philippines as well. My mom also did not have a favorite genre of music. She listens to everything as well. It is so sweet that he likes Eminem. It is so cool he self-taught himself the guitar. I did not know country music made it to the Philippines. I also think it is cool that he has been able to experience music in different cultures.

  2. Your dad sounds like a vibe. I love that he’s constantly got music going and even dances around. The blend of Filipino and American music influences is so cool, and the fact that he taught himself guitar and passed down the saxophone skills is amazing. It’s awesome how music connects you two, especially over artists like Taylor Swift. ‘Piano Man’ is a classic!
