I have loved learning about so many different cultures in this class, and the music of their history. It's all been so interesting, and I feel so much more knowledgable about these groups of people, but it has led me to also wonder what more is there that I have no idea about? What else can I explore? This assignment was very exciting to me because I do actually enjoy listening to music of other diverse cultures, so I am excited to share what I already like, but even more excited to learn about the music I never knew! For the first culture, I wanted to explore my own! My family is Filipino, and it wouldn't be possible to discuss Filipino traditional music without talking about Tinikling. Tinikling is a traditional folk dance in the Philippines that involves dancers, male or female, stepping over two bamboo sticks while the sticks are clapped together to the beat of a rhythm by the people holding them and both ends. It's a very fun, lively, and very tricky dance that has be...

Music and My Dad!

For this entry, I decided to interview my best friend and biggest musical influence in life, my dad! My earliest memories of music come from him listening to it 24/7 as I grew up, and he showed me all the best music from any era. He immigrated here from the Philippines so I thought it would be cool to also learn about music from the perspective of someone who's been a part of different cultures. He's even had some cool music stories over the years that I asked him to share. I hope you have as much fun watching this as I did doing it! I think my dad is a fun storyteller with some interesting but also comical things to say, so enjoy!  I started by asking my dad a few introductory questions about music. Music is very important to him, even though he was slow to elaborate on it at first...lol. Like he said, he listens to it everyday, which I can attest to since anytime I'm home, he has music either blasting from speakers, playing in his headphones, or coming from his very exte...

Music and Traditions

I come from a Filipino family and in Filipino culture, music is HUGE! Everyone can sing really well (that skill skipped me), but Filipinos tend to love big ballads that really showcase someone’s talent. With that said, karaoke is MAJOR for us, so at any family gathering, it definitely makes an appearance and everyone gets up to sing something. One Christmas, instead of some form of karaoke, my aunts paid a professional singer to come to our Christmas Eve party and he was great! Now he’s part of the family. When he sang though, the big ballad theme was certainly seen in what everyone in my family was requesting from him. Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” was one of the first requests. An education about Celine Dion was pushed on all the kids from a young age, so I grew up having watched many of her performances online. It didn’t matter if you were a boy or girl, in my family, you HAD TO listen to Celine Dion whether you liked it or not. I’m not complaining though, I think l...

Music and Me

Hi everyone! I'm Allie Nepomuceno and I really love music! I'm from Los Angeles, California and I'm a sophomore here at Converse. I came here to play soccer and also to study Psychology! Other than soccer and my major, like mentioned before I am very much into music (all kinds), but I am also very into traveling, movies, reality tv, nature, fashion, and iconic people in history/pop culture ranging from Princess Diana to John F. Kennedy (it is strange, but I think they are so interesting).  1. An example of music that is my current go-to: My current go-to is anything by the band Sharon Van Etten. I am really loving their music right now. I had known some of their songs years ago but never fully delved into their music until earlier this year. During Jan term I didn't have much to do so I started watching this show on Netflix called "Maid" because I'm a huge fan of the lead actress Margaret Qualley and had been meaning to start the show for a while. In the ...
